In 1997, Jeff Guinn, a writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, spent one week living as a homeless man in Fort Worth. What resulted was an inspired and informative, as well as award-winning, article about his experience. Guinn’s revealing article painted a picture for readers of life on the streets. Among the many revelations, the article noted that the homeless of Fort Worth were forced onto the streets during the day because of the lack of available resources in the community.

Guinn’s article had a major impact in the community, sparking concerned civic leaders to begin planning for a daytime shelter that would provide the homeless a safe refuge while providing resources to help them make the transition out of homelessness.

The planning came to fruition in 1999 when the Day Resource Center for the Homeless opened. Initially the DRC was open on a part-time basis, but the need for the services provided was evident immediately and soon the hours of operation expanded to five days per week. Now the DRC is open seven days a week and providing critical services to almost 4,000 individuals each year.

Our mission is simple, to provide centralized resources and services for transitioning people out of homelessness.
